WE21 Panel Additional Resources
Fundraising can be fun and successful when you bring your talents and passions into the mix. These diverse panel members devoted their expertise as a Visionary, a Researcher, a Marketer, a Student, an Event Planner, an Artisan, and more to obtain their goal of raising over $50,000 in SWE scholarship funds to have a positive impact on their community. You’ll learn how to grow your virtual community by utilizing social media appropriately, create teambuilding between Professionals and Collegiates, gain visibility for your Section, advertise locally and beyond, and expand your network to find supporters, while maintaining and strengthening the SWE brand. Panel members will share best practices of clarifying fundraising goals and aligning your vision, setting up accounts and proper bookkeeping, evaluating scholarship funds and options such as endowments, awards, and grants. The audience will brainstorm with experienced panelists/SWE leaders on member engagement through sharing hobbies, interests, and passion projects.
Advancing Gender Inclusion
We are inspired by the barriers which Mae broke as a woman in engineering in Hawaii. With this scholarship, we will support the next generation of engineers breaking gender and culture barriers.
In addition to women in engineering or technology, we support all underrepresented genders. Our scholarship recognizes the beautiful range of gender expressions which are underserved and underrepresented in STEM, such as Native Hawaiian Māhū, transgender, nonbinary, and more.
Engineering remains the most male dominated technical profession in the United States according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with less than 20% of working engineers being women. Students who identify as neither male nor female, or who are transgender or gender nonconforming, will face significant hurdles in higher education compared to their peers. According to the U.S. National Trans Survey 2015:

- 24% of trans and gender nonconforming students will be verbally, physically, or sexually harassed or assaulted at their college or university.
- 16% of these students left their college or university due to these experiences.
- 29% of adults in the community live in poverty compared to 14% of the general population. This is due to significant education and employment discrimination.
- 50% of transgender or gender nonconforming individuals will "medically transition" between the ages of 18 and 22, necessitating significant financial and social support.
- All statistics of harassment, discrimination, and inequity are significantly compounded for Black, Indigenous, and people of color in this community.
